Earl Frost discovered his talent for music thanks to the support that others showed in him. In this audio clip, he shares what he has learned about faith.

[Interviewer] What have you learned about faith that you want other people to know?

[Earl Frost] [laughter] Yeah, now. I think that faith is rewarding, sometimes it can be trying, and sometimes it can be good; it can be bad. But I’ve found that basically, if you have faith in people and trust in people, I think faith—I think trust comes along with faith. And if you have faith in a person or in what you do, then you work diligently in making it work. And I’ve found out that if you have faith, you can go longer than ordinary. If people turn you down, you can say, ‘I’m gonna try again. They couldn’t mean just no.’ Or, ‘I’m gonna try better to do this ‘cuz I know I can do it one way or the other.’ And then you put your mind to it. And I think that really faith is something that you have to have in yourself because if you have faith in yourself, then you can have it in others. And when people fail you in doing things, you have the faith that turns into hope. I’m the type of person that you can’t stop me. I know I’ve got faith. I’m gonna do that. So my faith in me has helped, my faith in Christ, because I know it all comes from him. I’ve seen myself strengthened in so many ways. When I reach out to get things, sometimes I even say a prayer before I do, and it helps. So I think faith is 99% of the battle.

HopeI often recall the sacrifices and trials I endured to raise my son. Would I say I have regret? I really cannot because this is how it happened.

DeathClearly my father understood his situation: he was dying and there was more pain to come. And yet here he was saying, as if he was letting us in on a secret, ‘All in all, we’re in pretty good shape.’ Was this just the medicine talking? The truth is that I had heard those words…

DeathI was a bomber pilot in World War II. We were the bombers who were knocking out hundreds of bridges in Italy. We became known as the ‘Bridge Busters’. We had to fly straight and level, otherwise we would never hit a 100-foot bridge. It was very touch-and-go. And we lost an awful lot of…

Struggle[Grace] You want to get on in the world, you want to be a success, and you think that’s really important. But in the end, that’s not what’s most important. The important thing is to find yourself, to know yourself, and to be grateful for what you have. You tend to exclude the frivolous things…

HopeI think my faith grew the most when I left home and came to Boston. I knew nobody. I wasn’t going to church at the time. If somebody wanted to hire me to play the piano at a church, I’d go, but I was looking for money. Don’t play with my money! But they told…
